I know zakk wylde uses emg's in his custom built les paul. Its always been in my head to go and switch over to some active pickups but im not sure exactly which ones to grab. I want something that sounds amazing!!! hey they make an epiphone version now.... weird!?!

getting a les paul only to put emg's in it is like getting all 4 wheel drive, huge tired, new shockes only to drive it in town. why bother getting a fuckign nice guitar with good wood and good natural tonal quility only to get it sucked out by a set of emg's. if you want emg's get a middle road jackson or something

i see what your saying.... so you think the les paul is better left "stock" then with shit added onto it.

maybe not 'stock' but with passive PU's that will work off the tonal value of the LP

if you want a nice screaming sound, the dimarzio X2N owns for sure. you should match it up with a lesser high PU for the neck. I have the x2n and PAF Pro, but a SD 69 or something would go good too
I have also heard wonderful things about the SD's invaders aswell, pretty simlilar to the x2n i think

In my opinion the Gibson burstbuckers are great pick ups no need to change them.If you want a Paul with EMGs get a ESP /LTD EC-1000 , Great guitars have EMG 81/60s,or spend the cash get a Zakk Paul with 81/85s only cost 4K.

I would have to agree get yourself an ESP EC series, if you want the bang for your buck, get an EC-400. I mean for $600-$800, your getting a whole lot of kick ass. Like the EC-1000 it comes with the emgs 81/60. Fucking awesome. Another suggestion, don't get the ZW setup when it comes to pickups (the emg 81/85 combo) I find the 85 to have too much of a muddy sound, its not bad for clean stuff, gives a nice warm feel. But when your using distortion on it there is ZERO clarity. This is something you (MG) and I found out first hand with my ESP Viper-400. Also the ESP EC is light and easy to use, the neck is alot thinner than your Gibson les paul. I mean those fuckers are like 10 lbs and have a very thick neck that can make it a pain for soloing furthermore the frets higher in the neck are too close together for my liking. The EC has them spaced out a bit more, just a bit. Speaking of good necks the Dean ML's have nice spacious frets higher in the neck....so good.
