so ive been doing a lot of thinking about music lately, and as much metal i listen to, or hard rock, classic rock, rock 'n' roll, anything, it all brings me back to some really great bands and albums eventually because i grow tired of the "new flashy" shit that is just a front and then grows dull.
what i want to do in this thread is really list the best bands and albums you can always listen to and never grow old of, to me this does include some metal, which is fine, but i want you guys to lay down whatever bands you can think of from any genre that fits this high standard.
please put the band/ album/ song name IN CAPS so it is easier to pick out
i find my self listening to a lot of LED ZEPPLIN lately, also PINK FLOYD... they give me a lot of satisfaction when i listen to them and they are simply great bands.. OPETH also does this for me, their newest album Watershed is very dynamic and i think its beautiful..
so theres a start hope you can all contribute cause i dont want any of us to be missing out on some great music

off the top of my head. Coldplay 'Parachutes' - One of the most laid back albums i've ever heard, just has fantastically simple and brilliant songs on it, and when i bought it I was on holiday in cornwall at christmas so it always takes me back to the sea. Last.fmHelios 'Eingya' - stunningly beautiful album, crystal clear production and ridiculously chilled out. Last.fmIsis 'Panopticon' - Incredible build-ups, fantastic vocals, effects, ambience, everything is just perfection. Last.fmGrails 'Burning Off Impurities' - one of the most interesting albums i've heard in a very long time, there is nothing quite like it, one of the main influences of Soft Temple. Last.fmGregor Samsa '55:12' - Full of epic moments and beautifully quiet and tense moments to contrast. coupled with stunning female and male vocals. Last.fmNeurosis 'The Eye of Every Storm' - incredibly tense album, the whole feel is like it's building to something. Last.fmDan Arborise 'Around in Circles' - great acoustic songs, brilliant song writing as well as great guitar playing. Last.fmBeth Orton 'Central Reservation' - overall great album, stolen car is one of my fave tracks ever. Last.fmIn Flames 'The Jester Race' - great production, great solo's, great vocals, catchy riffs... Last.fmSolar Fields 'Leaving Home' - epic yet very chilled. great production and varied instrumentation. Last.fmFleet Foxes 'Fleet Foxes' - probably my fave album of 08 and easily the newest on my list. really amazing vocal melodies and great music over all. Last.fmBurial 'Untrue' - drenched in atmosphere, you can literally imagine being on a bus in a dodgy part of south london at 3am with the rain beating down outside and your hood up. Last.fmStereophonics 'Performance & Cocktails' - one of the first albums i ever bought, catchy tracks, great vocals, sing along choruses, brilliant album. Last.fmJames Newton Howard 'The Village OST' - quite simply a beautiful soundtrack. Last.fmIron And Wine 'The Shepherds Dog' - his best album yet, finally got a band together and has a more complete sound than his past albums. Last.fmFanuSamurai 'Focused Mind LP' - great atmosphere, mixing breakbeat with a samurai/japanese edge. Last.fmNick Drake 'Five Leaves Left' - great songs, soothing vocals, good lyrics, nothing to dislike. Last.fmSaturnus 'martyre' - incredibly icy and majestic album, full of emotion (or you could say devoid of it depending on how you look at it) Last.fm(i took the liberty of colouring it so you can see the difference easier, don't know if it worked haha) edit: added desciptions of why i chose them incase you wanted to check any out & links to the last.fm pages of the album in question (some have samples, some don't)

I also am going to have to post a part 1 and 2 since my collection is 400km away and ill have to go by memory today. This is in no particular order but albums that i've listened to that have a lot of meaning, feeling, and are very unique compared to the shit that society throws at us. These aren't ones I "currently" listen to but ones that have been with me for a long time.
edit: i tried, but cant do this without my collection in front of me. 200 band names to sift through just arent coming to me right now heh. Ill post them as soon as i get back home.

well, i must say, most of this is going to be metal to me i think, one of the reasons i made this thread amon amarth - the avenger: this album has amazing dynamics for a straight up deathmetal album i feel, especially the avenger, it really puts me in the album's universe bloodbath - resurrection through carnagefor me, one of the purist death metal albums ive ever heard. amazing. creedence clearwater revivalamazing band, some great rock 'n' roll moments, a summer favorite of mine. no particular album in mind, just as a whole iced earth - something wicked this way comesi like to think of it as amazing power metal, but its not like most power metal. it really sets up an atmosphere of grief and vengence, gets you right into the album in flames - jester race, lunar strain, subter.if youve never heard these albums, run to your local store and pick them up now. isis - panopticon, in the absence of truththanks to autumn ;D i love these albums, same as what autumn said about panopticon, and in the absence of truth has some wonderful moments as well jeff loomis - zero order phasea new solo album by the guitarist of nevermore. no vocals but his guitar playing paints a most excellent picture and it truly is a remarkable album. katatonia - brave murder day, the great cold distancebrave murder day: a great spin on monotony. the repitition i feel on this album really makes you zone out and hear every instrument and every note for what its worth the great cold distance: a beautiful take on a doom metal and hard rock esc feeling. these tracks have a vibe of despair and emptiness, yet satisfy with a richness in production led zeppelinclearly a remarkable band, i prefer their earlier/ mid work because i feel that the vocals get a little whiny towards the end. the mars volta - "de-loused in the comatorium" and "frances the mute" for me i can never grow tired of both of these albums, has a latin esc feel to it, with technical riffing, really chaotic and abstact at times, with a neo-psychedelic feel muse - black holes and revelationsnot sure how to describe muse, but this album has a futuristic / wild west feel to it with great songs from top to bottom nevermoreone of my personal favorite bands, their albums are reliable any time to listen to, with political agendas and great musicians. vocals are layered in seemingly bizare ways at first, but untill you listen to him more and more, you will never find the true beauty novembre - the bluethis is a beautiful album if there was one in metal. dynamic lullaby feels to driving flowing riffs, never heard anything like it opethwell, as opeth aged, each album grew in a new direction with them. masterpiece after masterpiece (to me at least) always in a new defining direction. every time they release a new album i grow a little skeptical that they wont produce like they have in the past, and they always out do them selves (besides the grand conjuration hah) im going to have to finish this later... exhausted
